Who are the Cyrenians

The Cyrenians Community Centre is an award-winning project that offers health support, subsidised food, advice and training to disadvantaged people by day, and a venue for community groups in the evenings.

Funded by the European Social Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund, primary health care is provided through a partnership between the Cyrenians and the Swansea Local Health Board. A specialist nurse is on site every morning, and the centre is linked to a local GPs practice through an enhanced service.

Subsidised healthy food is available each weekday at the Owl and Parrot café, and a range of activities and training is on offer.  The thriving Nine Carrots food cooperative operates from the centre each week.

The centre has already established itself as a key resource for Swansea, with its emphasis on healthy living and community involvement. The long-term health benefits to a section of the community that hasn't always been able to access mainstream services will be profound.

So What is This About?

We have fully restored St. Matthew’s Church in the High St with the support of European funding and CRASH, so that it can be a vibrant centre in the heart of Swansea for many years to come.

For many centuries the Church of St John the Baptist stood on this site founded by the Knights Hospitallers in the 12th century. The present building, dedicated to St Matthew, dates from 1880 and is grade 2 listed. The plans are to convert the building into a resource centre over two floors, while retaining the front part (High Street) as a chapel for worship for the local congregation. The Church in Wales are keen to use the building for a socially beneficial purpose that is in keeping with the site's illustrious history.
