The Cyrenians were warded a prize was £3,000 to spend on sexual health initiatives for female clients (as per the nomination).

Jan shall speak at the 2009 Shelter Cymru conference on how we used the prize and what we have achieved for our female service users.

Nine Carrots Trip to Margam Park

on June 20th, 2008 the team that run The Nine carrots Food Co-operative went on a team building trip to Margam Park. This is their impressions of the day

"On the nine carrots day out to Margam, we had a laugh on the bus on the way there, reading magazines and chatting. When we arrived at Margam Park the staff were very helpful. We went for a walk around and discovered that they took the maze away four years ago. We saw the geese and swans and fed them duck food.
We had a picnic and went on the train at the end of the day."

Amanda

"It was lovely and peaceful in Margam park with the grass, trees and the bushes. We saw swallows flying low. We fed the ducks and there were two swans. There were pigs and rabbits in large runs. We had a picnic and went to the shops. It was lovely to have a holiday from work and have food and company in the countryside."

Sue Hutson

"I went to Margam Park with the Nine Carrots Food Co-operative as a thank you for volunteering. I enjoyed myself, plenty to see and do. I would like to go again. Craig and Debbie made us a lovely picnic. Thanks to the cyrenians for taking us."

Kay Thomas

"I enjoyed the trip, the company, the birds singing. I saw a pig in the mud, who only moved when we turned our backs. The weather wasn't too bad."

Cyrenians Community Centre Wins AFAL award

The Afal Award ceremony

From Left to Right, Jay Berry (Food Standards Agency), Clare Evans (Cyrenians Cymru) and Andrew Davies A.M. - Minister for Finance and Public Service Delivery.

We are delighted to share the good news that we have won an AFAL award (Award for Food Action Locally) from the Food Standards Agency. This is in recognition for our Nine Carrot Food Cooperative, Subsidised Owl and Parrot Café and Voucher System, use of volunteers within the kitchen, our medieval garden and the use of herbs within the kitchen, our composting and our Open College Network (OCN) basic cookery course.

The Nine Carrots crewFrom left to right, Clare Evans (Cyrenians Cymru), Michael Cross (9 Carrots Food Cooperative), Craig Williams head chef, Liam Healy kitchen assistant, Dave Ferguson (volunteer kitchen), and Jay Berry Food Standards Agency.

We are also developing a cookery book from minority groups who use the centre in the evening. All are aimed at socially deprived people who may not otherwise have had access to healthy affordable foods in an area of high deprivation. We are presently having some vegetables planters made in partnership with Res-a-Rec where we will grow tomatoes, potatoes and onions for use in our café. We will continue to build on this success.

You can download the Iechyd Da newsletter which details this from this link. (2.5Mb). Also you can read the Food Standard Agency Press Release on the Cyrenians Website.
